Enright Green Economy Book Award

Lecale Conservation are delighted to share that our long standing member, treasurer and Climate Action Youth leader Cadogan Enright has been nominated for a prestigious Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) Best Innovation Award for individual Councillors across Northern Ireland, for his book, sponsored by and informed by Lecale Conservation YouthLecale Youth Energy Campaign.

His book “How the Green Economy Can Fund Local Government” is based on work done by Lecale Youth members Cathal Quinn and CadÓg MacIonnreachtaigh over the last number of years. Councillor Enright worked with the Lecale youth team in Summer Camps in 2022, 2023 and 2024 to deliver training on Freedom of Information requests, Environmental Information Requests and data management, alongside putting together the detailed case studies into a readable book, which Cadogan has published, with sponsorship by Lecale Conservation and the National Association of Councillors (NI).

Councillor Enright said “My practical ‘How To Do’ book is more like a manual for Councillors on how to use the Green Economy to reduce rates or provide better front line services to the ratepayer.
“I was asked by the NI Region of the National Association of Councillors to write the book after they saw my detailed 32 page submission for the rates in Newry Mourne and Down detailing the dozens of Green and Energy Transition’ projects we could use to reduce rates and improve services in our Council. They have ordered a copy for every Councillor across the 11 Councils by way of being a training manual.”
“The book gives a simple pictorial overview of each of the 14 ideas in turn. Using examples of other Councils across Britain and Ireland that have successfully implemented these ideas previously. Each section is linked by QR codes to more detailed documentation on each idea with supporting financial figures. So the 32 page A4 sized book is essentially a digital filing cabinet packed with useful information and contacts on each idea.
“I appreciate the gesture of nominating me for the awards as it will help get these ideas out across the country. These ideas will improve the funding of Councils, make them less dependent on rate increases to fund their front line services and prepare Northern Ireland for the 4th Industrial Revolution. I want to thank the National Association of Councillors NI Region for their support in this project.”
