Lecale Rights of Way

Years of work by Lecale members on popular rights of way.

Over many years Lecale Conservation members have worked to

  1. Preserve existing rights of way and ensure they are properly maintained. click here for example of how we logged maintenace issues in a report for Council on a key section of the Lecale Way from Lough Money to Saint Patrick’s landing point on Strangford Lough.
  2. Fight to recover popular rights of way where N.I. government, Councils or National Trust have not acted to prevent their closure. Click here to see example of how we campaigned for years to successfully get Holymont walk back as a public right of way.
  3. Publish traditional rights of way in our area. Click here to see book on traditional Lecale rights of way In  this book we also educate the public on the law and how N.I. government, Councils or National Trust have not acted to preseve rights of way as legally required to do.
  4. Publish (click here for book) how our traditional walks link to long-distance walking trails across Ireland and how the N.I. government, Councils or National Trust have failed to deliver obvious and necessary work to restore links and re-create the sort of long-distance walks found in RoI, Scotland Wales and England.

By collecting and providing this information to all, we are making it easier for other prople to campaign for rights of way in Lecale, County Down, N.Ireland and across the Island of Ireland.

We believe that ultimately a network of nature friendly walks will exist across our country and this is our substantial contribution to making it happen.
